Warren pick

Barack Obama announced the other day that Rick Warren will give the invocation at his inauguration ceremony. What's interesting to me is both the left wing and the right wing are not happy with the choice. From what I can tell, the conservatives are not happy because Warren merely accepted the invitation. Progressives, on the other hand, object to many things Warren has said, specifically, Warren's insistence on not being homophobic after comparing gays to pedophiles and polygamists. Warren claims that for 5,000 years marriage has been between one man and one woman. Really? The truth is marriage has been one man OWNING one or more women. To say that gay marriage is immoral according to the Bible is laughable. Exactly where does it say that? Don't we now consider polygamy, arranged marriages, marriages of convenience and marriages for political or monetary gain immoral? What about concubines? All of these things have been practiced in the last 5,000 years. It has only been in the last 30 years where women have been able to live freely and independent of her husband. The last vestiges of coverture where not dead until the late 1970's.
I for one am very tired of political parties using my life and relationships as tools to both polarize electorates and "bring people into the tent". I defy anyone to prove to me that if I can marry my domestic partner how that erodes anyone elses marriage. Warren himself admits that the biggest threat to marriage is divorce. Proposition 8 is nothing more than mean-spirited.
Barack Obama will never make us all happy. During the campaign I wanted him to punch back at McCain. He took the high road and won. I can't decide if this is a shrewd political move or just ignorance of how much it pisses progressives off. Next year we won't even be talking about this. Or maybe progressives will point to this choice and say, "He was right." We shall see.
